[65] The good works accomplished by believers as they are sanctified are considered to be the necessary outworking of the believer's salvation, though they do not cause the believer to be saved. [62] Sanctification, like justification, is by faith, because doing good works is simply living as the son of God one has become. Pierre Ameaux, a citizen of Geneva, was forced to crawl to the door of the Bishop’s residence, with his head uncovered and a torch in his hand. When Luther and other reformers looked to the words of the Bible (and there were efforts at improving the accuracy of these new translations based on early Greek manuscripts), they found that many of the practices and teachings of the Church about how we achieve salvation didn't match Christ's teaching.

The Anabaptist or Free Church movement is considered by some to be part of Protestantism; others classify the Anabaptists as an independent group altogether. Do we sometimes speak and act in ways that give rise to such an idea? For example, Stott suggests that exegesis should grow out of theology, rather than the reverse, when he writes, “I think the Jews (like all human beings) were more self-righteous than Professors Sanders and Dunn allow.
